The Gory Cruelties of the British Empire

Filed under: The past that is still with us,The world today — John Maass @ 11:00 am

Here, there’s a on-line piece a few years old that details some of the most shameful British atrocities in a long imperial past characterized to a huge extent by such terror all over the world.  This particular column is about Kenya.

Kenyan Mau Mau veterans’ groups are cataloguing a potentially damaging dossier on alleged human rights abuses in the 1950s. This could lead to a huge legal action for compensation against the UK Government.  The Mau Mau uprising in Kenya in the 1950s was a murky part of the British military’s past.

The ruthless, clandestine Mau Mau movement found its roots in the Kenyan Kikuyu tribe.  Their aim was to win back their land and personal freedoms denied them by the British colonial power at the time.

Lawyers, working with Kenyan Mau Mau veterans’ groups, have taken over 6,000 depositions alleging numerous major human rights abuses, including rape, torture, indiscriminate killing and theft of property.

For more on Kenya, click here.  This tells the 1959 story of 85 internees at the Hola Detention Camp in Kenya refused to take part in forced labour and sat down in protest. Internees in the camp had been refusing to work for nine days and now these men were to be made an example. When the camp commander, G M Sullivan, blew his whistle over 100 guards attacked the prisoners with clubs and rifle butts, killing one of them.

A related piece on British atrocities in Iraq is hereThe Guardian from 2002 has a very well-done column here, on the denial by most British officials and citizens of its abuses in the past.

Complacency about Britain’s imperial record lingers on. In the post-September 11 orgy of self-congratulation about the west’s superiority, Blair’s former foreign policy guru, Robert Cooper, and a host of journalistic flag-wavers were urging us not to be ashamed of empire. Cooper insisted empire was “as necessary now as it had been in the 19th century”. The British empire was, we were assured, a generally well-intentioned attempt to inculcate notions of good government, civilised behaviour and market rationality into less well-favoured societies.

Is such a rosy view of British imperialism justified? Many argue that it is. After all, surely the British have less blood on their hands than the French and the Belgians? Wasn’t the British addiction to the free market a prophylactic against the horrors of forced labour? And didn’t those peculiar class obsessions make them less racist than the rest – silly snobs, but not vicious yobs? And isn’t India not only a democracy, but, thanks to the British, one with great railways? Perhaps there is a kernel of truth in some of this, but there’s also much wilful smugness. While the complex consequences of colonial economic policy require extended analysis, it is possible to dispel more swiftly the myth that the British Empire, unlike King Leopold’s, was innocent of atrocities.

And this is all to say nothing of their attempts at wiping out the Irish race for hundreds of years….

  2. Their is plenty of evidence out there that reveals the rapine and pillage of British Imperialism in third world countries. But their is also an organized effort in the western countries like UK, US etc. to cover-up the atrocities committed by British colonists upon the people of africa and India.

    Wrong history of British empire is being taught by many historians, to cover-up the brutality of British colonists. In India the officials of British empire, posted on their buildings “Indians and dogs are not allowed”, and during the Bengal famine of 1943 the colonists of British empire shipped all the food rice, wheat etc. to England and Europe which resulted in death from starvation of 3 million Indians. The massacres and plunders of several British tyrants like general dyer and Robert Clive were enough to permanently transform economically rich countries of africa and India into a poverty stric.ken hell ruled by the free-masonic puppets of British royal families, British imperialism was only about making profits through exploitation of people.

  3. I heard that the British also have caused atrocities against korea too, then forcing the Korean government, and the women that were raped to lie about it and blame it on Japan. The british are lieing, they’re hiding something so koreans of this age hate Japan but don’t understand why.

  4. The British Empire has always been presented by the British as benevolent and the Spaniards cruel, sadistic monsters. In reality, it was an empire based on greed, bigotry, racism, cruelty, violence, etc,etc,etc and they have never been called to account for their cruelty to humanity and civilian crimes. Yet they persecuted the Nazis who albeit should have been punished, did it in a war frenzy under an insane dictator. I think the Brits should be accountable for what they have done in their former empire. Frankly they have gotten away too easily!

    Judge Claudine, states that her Claims for Meritocratical Restitution and Reparations Compensation and Corrections as in Good and Proper Justice as per her Recommendations to the British Government , Monarchy, Oppenheimers, Rothschilds, ……etc. since 2008 already, should be expedited and dealt with Out – of – Expensive Government-Biased Apartheid Courts, with immediate effect.

    The Blacks have now had their Black Majority Power from North Africa since 1994 and enriched themselves therewith.

  6. ABOUT CIVILIZATION, COMMUNICATION & RESPECT

    To those ill-mannered/ immoral, uncivilized, no-conscience, [if your parents, teachers, government etc could not teach you so – then you should learn it from others, who are civilized], uneducated [you do NOT have to have been to an institution, to be educated by the way], sly, etc ones, whom the People know as well, such as ………………….. from Swaziland and now in SA too, etc..who suddenly, since 23 May 1993 opportunistically and criminally, WANT to be my/ our ‘family’ behind my back and to others ones too, of terrorising, criminal, corrupt, lying, sadistic, perverted, warped, biased, Imperial, British Apartheid, American etc ANC-SACP-COSATU regimes and authorities ‘commissions’ etc, Mining Bosses, AAC, De Beers, RBS, Barclays, etc, Judiciaries of corruption, terror, immoral, inhumane Laws and Practices of Gross abuses and crimes against humanity, against Decent, Innocent & Vulnerable People, too,
    yet tell me they are my Enemy.

    Firstly – I have never had Any Enemies in this evil World.
    Also it does not mean that if I do not want to associate with others that they are my ‘enemy’.

    Secondly – If you say, i am Your enemy, then so be it.

    Thirdly – But, Let it be known – You are NOT My Family, because you do NOT know the true meaning of this word too, and I Choose whom I call my Family, too.
    Danielle etc say I ‘attacked’ her when I sent her a letter EXPLAINING my reason for unfriending her and my Proper Family on fb, but idiotically….they call it an ‘attack’ on an ‘enemy’. This was/ is NOT my Choice of company at all, thank you!

    Fourthly – If you cannot Communicate in a Civilized manner, then do not do so with your Abusive ‘language’, etc which you happen to use, daily too, when writing to me.
    Do not learn from the British’s evilness and warpedness.
    [not meant to the few decent and good Brits-only The majority, of whom, the shoe
    fits.]

    Fifthly – Forgiveness –as you mention too, comes only AFTER meaningful Apologies and Change/ reparations & restitution too, where possible/ affordable, too!
    And it does Not automatically mean, you are my family or friend either.

    Sixthly – The Proper meaning of the words Family & Friend, go hand in hand with the Words of Love, Respect, Truth and Help -Not with Abuse, Hatred, Jealousy, Greed, Lies [black], Criminality, Terrorism,
    Two-facedness.

  7. THE SYSTEMATIC, SUPREMACIST BRITISH APARTHEID ABUSES OF POWER – WORKPLACES, etc.

    CONCLUSION – {briefly}

    Having since 1752, been/ am enormously discriminated against, robbed and oppressed by the British Apartheid Policies & Practices, Bosses, Judiciary [since 1994], only because I happen to be a decent, innocent and vulnerable South African and mixed nationality – Coloured person/ woman, I/ we did not become wealthy or even live a good and proper life, such as which/ what the White British especially, then the other White foreigners of since 1880 had in my Country of South Africa and afterwards overseas too, especially in London, England.

    I was told in 1986, on our return to South Africa since 1985, by ‘White’ British colleagues at Johannesburg Consolidated Investments, correctly so, as I have now experienced, observed and discovered too, that ‘in this World, it is only WHO you know and not WHAT you know’. Of course, I immediately replied, “that is pure corruption”.

    I was never told to redo my work, ie the hundreds of technical diagrams I had produced with the said Engineers, in Johannesburg and London. I had my own standards, which I applied, as well as ISO standards and they were then used by the others as well.
    My diagrams/ drawings were also used for overseas Projects too, as some had no Project names I had to write on them, such as in the manufacturing industry production and the
    huge computerised control rooms ones, too clandestinely.

    Only I, was verbally abused in certain drawing offices, by two jealous racist Chequslovakian females, one Portugese one, ‘White’ British males and 2 females and Jewish Brenda at JCI then, who all did no or very little work, but also had job-security.
    I was the only person to be shot disrespectfully with elastic bands, by British males, to attract my attention, while standing and drawing at my desk or seated and checking my work, and by and grossly discriminated against in other ways, such as pay, rates, contract offers, etc.
    My other tasks which I was given to do, were also done to the best of my ability and correctly, but also underpaid etc.

    I was never late nor absent from work, but for 3days only in 12-15 November 1986,
    after I had had a very powerful visionary experience from 11pm to 6am on 11/11/86,
    of the Lord, after I jad read the Holy Bible and then fallen asleep and was thus
    extremely exhausted thereof and even felt completely ready to die peacefully.

    The only bosses who treated me respectfully, were at:
    Aerial King Sales – Solovei’s; Majolica Pottery – Torrente’s & Belloni’s;
    Schindler Lifts – Mr. Rene Hassler, Mr. Human etc; Siemens – Mr. Van Niekerk;
    Asea Electric – George Rushworth & Rob Harper;
    Group 5 Projects – John Coxen & Mr. Anton Botes;
    Anglo Alpha Cement – Noel Olivier & Mr. Sam Kwasnik;
    JCI – Steve Fazekas [American-Hungarian]; LTA – Tom Ryan & Frank Joubert;
    Liberty Life – Johan Pienaar & an elderly British one…, who also gave me too, the beautiful bouquet of flowers comprising 13 different species, as they did to the two White’ British ones too & the top Management who presided in my unfair dismissal hearing; – though they could have done something to give me decent rates, but
    Mr. Van Niekerk certainly did so whole-heartedly and honestly, by given me drawings
    to do even after I had left them only because he praised me openly in the office too,
    for the quality and standard of my drawings and this made me very shy and the others, except for my friends then, wonderful Penny Roper [was from Swaziland & we had met in 1973 there], who introduced me to contracting and Janet Stegman, others hadvery jealous and verbally insulting towards me, in 1981, up until when we departed for London in 1983, to do at home – that is how I was then able to pay our way and have some money too to take with overseas, then only.

    God Bless late Mr. Hassler & Mr. Van Niekerk, for their and their Companies policies and practices towards me and to John Coxen and Mr. Anton Botes who tried but were overwritten by the top British Apartheid Bosses at Group 5, and the same with Steve Fazekas at JCI, too, which was in fact Controlled by the British Apartheid agents,
    Bosses, staff and contractors, just as in the other Mining Houses, Corporations and Companies too.
    I did not get the opportunity to work at Gencor & Gold Fields offices, but on their Projects elsewhere too, yes. De Beers and AAC/ Plc are the World LEADERS & SUPREMACIST of British Apartheid, since 1880 and now Worldwide, and will ensure that you do NOT get opportunities while with them and all theie Companies and will even Blacklist you so that you cannot get work again – whilst the British regimes – as
    of since 1700, when they startedtheir acts in foreign lands, having been savages and barbarians in the UK, since 400AD anyway. This is how evil and satanic the Lying Criminals in fact are. They will make you wealthy, immorally and corruptly, as they have now done to certain Blacks too in the New South Africa – all bribery and Corruption too, if you agree to follow their instructions on how to continue their Policies and Practices too. Yet they are portrayed in their Owned & controlled propaganda, biased Media as
    the Great Good Ones, hypocritically and Lying so. Yes, they will even kill you or get you locked up in mental ‘hospitals’ etc as they do even to Mr. Norman Scarth and thousands of others especially in UK & America and have now told the ANC…to do the same.

    As for International Bank of Southern Africa, the only Boss who treated me with
    respect there was Mr. Denis Worral, but the rest of his Management were most atrocious, especially young Fatima Mahomed the HR the British Apartheid manager and they also still owe me for her unfair dismissal, for me respectfully saying “goodbye” from my
    desk to a decent prospective employee, who had greeted me first, too, etc.

    I now see that it is indeed true, corruption certainly pays and so does crime-which includes, derogatory insults, unjustified discrimination, etc British Apartheid in this warped, perverted and sadistic South Africa especially and wordwide & now British ANC-SACP-COSATU policies and practices in South Africa and in the West and terrorism too, and not hard work, decipline, respect etc and what you know and do at all, according to this satanic World Order.
    Of course, China, is even worse, when it comes to People and Workers abuses and
    against the foreign, mostly Eastern/ Indian/ Phillipino etc construction workers in Dubai,
    etc too.

    This is precisely the Culture, of what has to change drastically.
    British tokenism is of incompetent Black faces in top positions, for pretence and
    personal privileges only, is not the answer either.
    Why did they not put competent people including of the few Coloured and Afrikaners
    I had encountered in South Africa especially, in any positions of power?
    Because jealous, greedy, criminal, disrespectful, selfish British Apartheid Policies & Practices are Paramount and Supremacist – that is why and the stupid Blacks try to do
    the same too, in reverse, colour-wise.

    Now, the Chinese gave/ give the jobs to Chinese people only in Angola too, I saw
    instead of to Black workers from Southern Africa. Black people are still NOT experienced etc enough yet, to be able to run any Country properly.

    These Companies & the other Corporations and Companies are all guilty of their abuses etc against us, as I have stated to the lying, hypocritical, abusive, selfish towards the very ones whom they Owe – Great British regime and to AAC/ Plc, De Beers and Rothschilds, etc……etc……etc.

    The very Fact that certain Banks, the Large Corporations Worldwide now especially, eg, British Apartheid Pretending, ‘Liberal’ De Beers and AAC, Gold Fieds etc etc, were Owned and Controlled primarily by members of the same families and Political Party at Chairman, Board and Managerial levels, is of the ultimate in Corruption and Apartheid, preventing us from any opportunities of advancements, promotions etc. then they went and made secret deals with certain one other Political Party leaders and members only for automatic and immediate, self-erichment, too and as was, but with ignorant, incompetent, Black faces too corruptly, while I/ we are still kept impoverished, dispossessed, robbed, abused, and oppressed.
    Even their Great ‘Auditors’ of eg Andersen Consulting, Ernest & Young, Delloitte & Touche, etc are all, complicitly and implicitly guilty too, hereof.

    My Book on Mr. CJ Rhodes, whom I call ‘Sir’as the British decorated all the other terrorists and criminals, throughout their history but not this man, who in fact did so very much for them all, of the 1800’s already, whom they all since Harry Oppenheimer in 70’s now suddenly blames only, ‘for Africa’s problems’ and the ‘White’ Afrikaners/ Boers & NP governments only for SA’s problems, contains the reasons for the above abusive experiences and observations of mine, which the corrupt British then British-American etc Apartheid Policied, Owned and Controlled Publishers Worldwide, will NOT publish, for obvious reasons –
    to Keep us ignorant of the TRUTHS of them ALL, especially the Power abusers
    [except the minority of decent & innocent Brits].

    Lastly, do not forget about the Black etc leaders who are also complicit and implicit and encourage/ d the people to use violence, corruption and serious criminality too for Political etc madness and power abuses too, throughout Africa, for the ills of Africa and Southern Africa.

    I found this also, only in July 2012 –

    By three methods we may learn wisdom:
    First, by reflection, which is noblest;
    Second, by imitation, which is easiest; and
    Third by experience, which is the bitterest.
    Confucius;

    War is the business of barbarians & savages too.

    How Margaret Thatcher helped end apartheid – despite herself

    Former PM opposed white rule in South Africa as a sin against economic liberalism rather than a crime against humanity

    Margaret Thatcher and Nelson Mandela

    Margaret Thatcher played a pivotal role in the ending of apartheid in spite of herself. She famously declared the African National Congress to be a “terrorist” organisation, but she gave these “terrorists” diplomatic protection. In the mid 1980s the South African government blew up the ANC offices in London and tried to kidnap its members in London, including Thabo Mbeki and Oliver Tambo. She was obliged to provide armed bodyguards for their most senior officials.

    A close aide once told me that she opposed apartheid more on the grounds that it was a sin against economic liberalism rather than a crime against humanity. She also was bitterly against sanctions of any sort – they were a crime against free trade. She even went on denouncing them after Britain and the rest of the Commonwealth had imposed a ban on sporting contacts and other marginal sanctions. She boasted that she alone had managed to fight off demands for stronger sanctions.

    Advised by her husband, Dennis, who had business interests in South Africa, she felt that anything that damaged wealth creation must be bad for South Africa. She was also a great admirer of Laurens van der Post, the South African writer and traveller later exposed as a fraud, who also opposed sanctions on the country. He introduced her to Mangosuthu Buthelezi, the Zulu leader, who played an ambivalent role in the struggle against apartheid, splitting from the ANC in 1979 and accepting “homeland” status for Kwazulu. His movement, Inkatha, helped the South African police repress ANC rebellion in the townships.

    But in spite of her instincts, Thatcher played a pivotal role in southern Africa. As Britain’s new prime minister in 1979 she was persuaded by Commonwealth leaders at their meeting in Lusaka, where she famously danced with President Kenneth Kaunda, to try to end the war in Rhodesia – now Zimbabwe. That led to the Lancaster House conference and an election in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe which was won overwhelmingly by someone she despised – Robert Mugabe.

    From that she was persuaded to try to deal with apartheid in South Africa. She began by making two trips to other countries in Africa. In 1988 I followed her to Kenya where she was greeted by the president, Daniel arap Moi, and to Nigeria where she was welcomed by the military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, to whom she sold tanks.

    In Kano, during that visit, she was feted by a Durbar by the Emir. The Kano Durbar traditionally ends with a cavalry charge, with the horses rearing up in the front of the Emir and guests, who must greet the riders with a clenched fist salute. At that time the clenched fist was best known as the protest gesture of the Black Power Movement. Thatcher tried to wave but the emir insisted she followed tradition. I caught a glimpse of her appalled face as she looked at her raised and closing hand. She never quite completed the action.

    The following year she visited Mugabe in Zimbabwe, where British troops were training Mozambicans to fight off the South African-backed Renamo movement. A mock attack was organised and she sat between Mugabe and Joachim Chissano to observe. The “bushes” right in front of them suddenly sprang to life and started shooting. The noise was deafening and nobody had warned the watchers that tracer bullets fired away somehow look as if they are coming towards you. I saw Mugabe and Chissano duck and some of the officials flung themselves down. Thatcher didn’t blink.

    A few years later, a call came through to Downing Street on a Sunday afternoon from a public phone. It was Mugabe. He had come to London privately with his then wife, Sally, who needed regular dialysis for diabetes. He asked if he could come to visit Thatcher. She agreed and on a Sunday evening at Downing Street the two sat and talked informally about the world and life like old friends – she sipping whisky and he water. It was not the only time that happened.

    Although some aid was announced on her Africa trips and, more important to Mrs T’s agenda, trade deals struck, the journeys were essentially about South Africa. She boasted about fighting off demands for sanctions against South Africa with more vigour than she denounced apartheid, so her advisers persuaded her that she had to do something positive to show she was not supporting the South African government. The strategy was to give them the assurance that there would never be sanctions and use that goodwill to force reform.

    I was briefed off-the-record by her foreign affairs adviser on several occasions, but when he told me that she had called on the then president, PW Botha, to release Nelson Mandela, I found it difficult to believe. I did not report it as I could not source it. But it was true. In a letter to Botha in October 1985 she wrote: “I continue to believe, as I have said to you before, that the release of Nelson Mandela would have more impact than almost any single action you could undertake.”

    When Botha stepped down after a stroke in 1989, he was replaced by FW de Klerk, who met Thatcher at Downing Street in June. I was among a group of journalists waiting outside No 10 with the promise that he would give a press conference straight after. We watched him leave then ran up Whitehall to the South African embassy where he had promised to speak. He did not turn up. We were told later that he had been too shocked by Thatcher’s vehemence.

    Mandela was released on 11 February 1990 (I was at the gates of the jail but to my eternal chagrin I failed to spot him). That evening he made a speech from the balcony of the town hall in Cape Town which was televised, live, world wide. The speech was written by the hard-liners and communists in the ANC and was full of Marxist jargon. “Our resort to the armed struggle in 1960… was a purely defensive action against the violence of apartheid. The factors which necessitated the armed struggle still exist today. We have no option but to continue.” Thatcher was appalled. She picked up the telephone to Robin Renwick, the British ambassador in South Africa, and demanded to know why she had ever bothered to battle for Mandela’s release if this was the result.

    But Mandela felt that at this stage he had to submit himself to party discipline. That was the reason that among the first people he visited after his release was Muammar Gaddafi. And when he came to London, the ANC central committee insisted – against his wishes – that he did not meet Thatcher. After he did finally meet her later that year he thanked her for helping to end apartheid and announced this at a press conference soon after. Senior ANC officials spluttered with rage.

    My last meeting with Thatcher was at De Klerk’s book launch at Foyles in 1999. I asked her about South Africa and her role. She launched into praise for De Klerk and then for Van der Post and Buthelezi – “a marvellous man” she kept repeating. I asked what she thought about Mandela. “I never met him,” she said looking confused. How could anyone meet Mandela and not remember? Now I realise why.

That led to the Lancaster House conference and an election in Rhodesia/Zimbabwe which was won overwhelmingly by someone she despised – Robert Mugabe.32 minutes ago · Like

    Claudine Fourie-Grosvenor MY WORD – THIS BEING THE CASE THEN ALREADY IN 1990 – ALSO OF WHICH WE HAD NO KNOWLEDGE IN THE PRESS/ MEDIA ABOUT AS WELL, IN SOUTHERN AFRICA OK – YET THEY GET ALL THE CREDIT AND PRAISES FOR HIS ‘RELEASE AND THEIR AND ANC ENDING OF APARTHIED’ – HAHAAAAA WHAT A BLOODY JOKE AND MORE ‘LEGAL’ CRIMINAL BLOODY GROSS OPPORTUNISTIC LIES, INDEED ! She picked up the telephone to Robin Renwick, the British ambassador in South Africa, and demanded to know why she had ever bothered to battle for Mandela’s release if this was the result.17 minutes ago · Like

    Claudine Fourie-Grosvenor YIP SO THIS PROVES TOO, HOW COMPLICIT SHE AND FW DE KLERK IN FACT WERE/ ARE, ‘TIS NO WONDER THAT HE HAS SO MUCH PRAISES FOR HER TOO. AND SHE LIES HERE ALSO, AGAIN BY STATING TAHT SHE HAD NEVER MET MR. MANDELA,…AND WHAT ABOUT THE THATCHERS HAVING BEEN INVOLVED IN SOUTH AFRICA FOR MANY YEARS PRIOR AS THE KEEPERS OF THE 2nd DUKE OF WESTMINSTER’S STOLEN PROPERTY OF MINE IN THE ORANGE FREE STATE REGION AS WELL AND OF CAROL THATCHER’s CONNECTION THERE AS WELL !!! ??? My last meeting with Thatcher was at De Klerk’s book launch at Foyles in 1999. I asked her about South Africa and her role. She launched into praise for De Klerk and then for Van der Post and Buthelezi – “a marvellous man” she kept repeating. I asked what she thought about Mandela. “I never met him,” she said looking confused. How could anyone meet Mandela and not remember? Now I realise why.5 minutes ago · Like
