I guess when the EU lets you keep your currency and not adopt the Euro, you get other concessions as well:

Britain can carry on using imperial measurements such as pints, pounds and miles, the Eu Commission has ruled.   Europe’s Industry Commissioner Gunter Verheugen said it was time to end a “pointless battle” after decades of wrangling between London and Brussels over pressure to switch to the metric system.
