Fat Studies

Filed under: The Academy — John Maass @ 9:30 am

I’m not making this up….there’s an area of sociological inquiry called fat studies.  I learned about this by seeing an announcement looking for scholars to present papers on this burgeoning academic field.  As stated in the call for papers, “topics may include, but are not limited to fat phobia, size discrimination and group-based inequality; issues of fat embodiment, sexuality and experiences of everyday shame; and possibilities for fat personhood and the creation of a livable life.”

Do they get their own pun, “fat embodiment”?
